Schools evaluate quality to determine online options - Sherri Begin, Crains Detroit Business
Not all colleges and universities see online classes as the holy grail. Academic philosophies about the need for face-to-face instruction and the perceived quality of Web-based courses play into schools’ decisions about whether or not to offer them. The University Of Michigan in Ann Arbor allows each of its individual schools to determine their own online strategies, said James Hilton, associate provost for academic information technology. “We provide technology to enable schools and colleges to do online learning if they want, but our budget model and our philosophy is to put most of the control and strategic direction in the hands of the schools and colleges,” he said.
