Convenience, affordability fuel trend at ISU, U of I - MADELAINE JEROUSEK, DesMoines Register
The state's fiber optic network, once touted as the best way to deliver higher education to more Iowans, is losing its luster on Iowa's two largest university campuses. Interactive video conferencing courses offered through the Iowa Communication Network have fallen out of favor in the past five years at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University, replaced instead by online classes. The ICN is "a very good system, but there are reasons people are shifting away from it," said Anne Zalenski, associate director of distance education at the U of I. "What it simulates is a classroom environment. It's real time, and you have to be able to participate in real time. What people are looking for is something that they can do at midnight from the convenience of their home."
