Open University revision for 21st century - Molly Watson, Western Mail
The face of late-night television is set to change forever after Open University announced it will no longer be broadcasting its late-night programmes. The Open University, which broadcast its first programme in 1971, announced it will be replacing its late-night educational programming with a range of science, knowledge and history shows to be aired at peak times on the BBC. For many the university is synonymous with tweed jackets and what is known as television's "graveyard shift" but the decision reflects the steps which the OU has taken in recent years to embrace new technology. Most of the OU's 200,000 students, 6,000 of whom are studying in Wales, now have access to the internet, making the days of watching earnest academics on television a thing of the past. Instead students use DVDs, CD-Roms and e-learning.
