When it comes to digging into history, I'll admit my idea of a good time has been to gently pile through manuscripts in air-conditioned archives rather than to venture outdoors in pursuit of ancient treasures. Yet, the path to the past captured in Florida's sand and limestone goes back so far beyond the human record that it's difficult to grasp. That's the trail folks who hunt fossils travel. "Florida is a fossil-hunter's paradise," a state Web site proclaims. Fossils in the exposed rocks of our state range from 45 million-year-old sand dollars to bones from the Ice Age saber-toothed tiger 10,000 years ago. Now, an online course in Florida fossils will make it possible for even us pasty indoor specimens to vicariously experience the adventure of outdoor fossil-hunting.
