Policing for plagiarism - Jason Foster, The Herald
Academic integrity, particularly the pitfalls of plagiarism, was drilled into Brandi Cohen's mind almost immediately upon coming to Winthrop University. "Plagiarism is a big no. There's a big emphasis on that," said Cohen, 19, a sophomore. "That's the first thing they tell you -- don't do it." Cohen said she would never plagiarize, if for no other reason than the fear of getting caught. But if fear is what it takes to stay on the straight and narrow academically, Cohen and other Winthrop students say so be it. Recent surveys and media reports have cited the growing prevalence of plagiarism or other forms of cheating among college students. While Winthrop students and faculty say their school isn't immune from such indiscretions, safeguards are in place. Winthrop is one of many schools across the country using TurnItIn.com, a Web site that cross-references students' papers with 100 million Web sites, including so-called "paper mills," to determine whether passages have been plagiarized.
