Investigation Finds Taxpayer Money Going to Diploma Mills - John Cochran, ABCNEWS.com
Most graduates labor for years to get their degrees. But Laurie Gerard was happy to send you a diploma right away if you sent her a check. She was part of a scam at "Columbia State University," which was nothing more than a mail drop in Louisiana. Gerard told the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee: "There were no tests. There were no classrooms. There was no campus. You had a textbook, you summarized the textbook. And once that was completed you got your diploma." Gerard has pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud, and is awaiting sentencing. Congressional investigators emphasize there are many reputable schools which offer meaningful diplomas through "distance learning." But the General Accounting Office, the congressional watchdog, also found dozens of diploma mills on the Internet. Anyone looking at the Web site for Lexington University would likely be impressed.
