'Virtual community' is open for business - Kate Youde, The Telegraph
Thanks to shiny new technology - and the fear of debt - the Open University is convincing record numbers of young students to turn their backs on mainstream universities. This year the OU has 15,000 students aged 24 or under, equivalent to a good-sized university and treble the 1997 total. The institution has come a long way since its foundation in 1969 and today has more than 152,000 students. Gone are the days of 3am television programmes fronted by corduroy-clad professors with Bobby Charlton comb-overs and dodgy flares. Today's OU is bright, fresh and multimedia driven. The growth of the internet has created what the university's pro vice-chancellor, Professor Allan Cochrane, terms a "virtual community of learning". He sees it as an attractive academic alternative for a technologically minded generation. Average age of a new OU undergraduate is 33.
