.... For some local undergraduate and graduate students, computers have replaced classrooms entirely, such as the popular and growing programs at Mercy College and Westchester Community College, using applications such as the one developed by the graduate school of Polytechnic University in Elmsford. "It makes it possible for students and faculty to interact with each other," said Jeffrey W. Alstete, associate dean at Iona's Hagan School of Business, who co-authored a study on the effectiveness of distance learning programs. Iona offers six distance learning courses that allow students to participate in class discussions online, and take exams and file research papers — all without setting foot in the classroom. The classes, which enroll primarily graduate MBA students but are attended by some undergraduates as well, are growing in popularity nationwide.
