China, Russia, and the United States jointly launch global computer network ring
.... The new network is known as Little GLORIAD (Global Ring Network for Advanced Applications Development), and will be used to improve the reliability and flexibility of researchers in jointly addressing scientific issues, such as natural and man-made disasters, the safeguarding of nuclear materials, cooperation in the study and mapping of the human genome, space exploration, monitoring seismic events, fusion energy research and high-energy physics. The network will also be used to facilitate the sharing of information between universities and local schools, including seminars, distance-learning programs and multi-national science fairs. Little GLORIAD is actually the first step towards building an even higher-speed network, which will be known as GLORIAD. China, Russia, and the U.S. are currently cooperating in the development of the higher-speed GLORIDAD network for a launch expected to take place in mid-2004. The higher speed network would be capable of providing a bandwidth of 10 gigabytes per second.
