....As they have grown in size and quality, however, these programs have begun to make inroads into the traditional college market -- to the point that they have prompted many universities that once looked down their noses at distance learning to begin offering programs of their own. Obviously, this competition poses more of a threat to third-rank colleges than it does Harvard and Georgetown. But give it time. At some point, the market will make it clear that the cost of a really world-class lecture course is less than $1,000 a year. And that may prompt more than a few students and parents to wonder exactly what the other $24,000 is buying.
