How One Community College Copes When Online Enrollment Soars - ANDREA L. FOSTER, Chronicle
Glenn Merrick, a biology instructor at Lake Superior College, is developing a course on the biology of aging that he eventually plans to offer online. But that doesn't mean he embraces the college's push for distance learning. "Online education is a problem, particularly with science instructors," Mr. Merrick says. "The fear among faculty is high about losing contact with students and the ability to directly engage them in what goes on in the lab or field." Six years ago Lake Superior College, a community-and-technical college in northeastern Minnesota, began aggressively developing and marketing online courses. That effort has paid off, with online enrollment more than quadrupling in the past four years. During the same period, the number of faculty members teaching at least one class online, including adjuncts hired specifically for that purpose, increased from 21 to 52.
