Virtually ready for nursing - JENNIFER TRUELAND, the Scotsman

When Elizabeth Rogerson trained as a nurse in Dundee Royal Infirmary in the 1970s, she spent her days pulling out beds to dust behind them and feeling terrified of "Sister". It’s a far cry from sitting at a computer asking a virtual patient where her pain is, and then taking part in an e-mail tutorial with an expert based thousands of miles away. What a difference 30 years makes. Now Ms Rogerson, a pioneer in nurse education at Dundee University, is working on a project to create a workforce of nurses who are trained virtually, over the internet. Whether it’s from a mission hospital in Africa, or a small community in Orkney, the student will be able to complete his or her training with the help of the best nursing schools and a whole ward of simulated patients - all available online.
