Promoting e-learning standards through RLOs - TAN EE SZE, ComputerWorld
The E-learning Competency Centre and the Information Technology Standards Committee recently held a Learning Objects Competition to promote the role of standards in the development of Singapore's e-learning industry. Reusable learning objects are small, stand-alone units of instruction that can be tagged with descriptors and stored in repositories for reuse in many different instructional contexts. They can be any instructional programmes such as lessons, case studies, quizzes, or interactions delivered using technology. "We want to encourage the use of e-learning standards here, and learning objects are really the starting points for the good use of these standards. Not only should we ensure that they are technically reusable and interoperable, they must also be pedagogically sound to bring out the educational value expected from these learning objects. After all, learning objects are really about good instructional design practice," explained Lim Kin Chew, executive manager of the E-learning Competency Centre (ECC).
