European and Central Asia Virtual University Association Improves Distance Learning Programs - Ulla Skidén, Converge
In June 2001 over 40 universities in Russia and Central Asia founded The European and Central Asia Virtual University Association (ECAVU). Since then, another 10 universities have become partners of the organization, which is growing steadily. One task for ECAVU, under its President and founder Andrei Tolstopiatenko, is to develop distance learning systems and courses. Another is to improve faculty qualification systems, along with marketing and setting up contacts with donor organizations. ECAVU helps to coordinate and improve a range of basic activities, both within the universities and between the members. The coordination of the ECAVU operations is run by the Institute of the Information Society (IIS) an NGO based in Moscow.
