Web classes delivered to the hinterlands - VICKI LEE PARKER, News and Observer

At Beaufort County Community College, administrators are taking the idea of the information superhighway literally. For years, the college was limited in its ability to set up distance-learning centers for people in some of the most rural parts of the state. Access to the Internet was spotty, forcing many students to drive 45 minutes along dark, narrow roads to get to class.... Realizing that it would take too long to wait for the state to wire these remote areas, the college went in a different direction. It outfitted a van with a satellite dish, the latest technology, a computer network server and 24 laptop computers. It started taking the Internet to its students.
