Professor puts online courses to the test - Michelle Meyers, Argus
After successfully completing an online computer class using his friend's identity, Chabot College instructor Larry Beal proved his intended point -- it can be easy to cheat in the school's online classes. But Beal, who was reprimanded last month by the college board for his actions, also triggered a broader debate about the extent to which online classes should be moderated to prevent academic fraud. Beal is tenured and has taught business and information technology classes at Chabot for more than 28 years. He went on leave last fall semester under a plan approved by Chabot's sabbatical board. He agreed to evaluate the efficacy of online delivery systems, and the plan included taking an online course in the California community college system, he said. Ed. Note: I must add that this seems to ignore the always-available and commonly-used options of authentication such as proctored examinations at remote locations which require producing photo-identification -ray
