Online classes gain popularity with students - Neil Rhines, Herald Times
The number of people taking courses through Lakeshore Technical College without ever seeing the inside of a classroom is growing exponentially. Doug Gossen, director of the Distance Learning Program at LTC, is excited about what he believes are expanding educational opportunities.... Many courses taught in the traditional manner (in a classroom with desks and an educator) need a certain amount of students in them to ensure they are cost-effective. These courses, offered through statewide Instructional Television, or globally through online courses, give the local student another way of learning the subject, and the distance learner a chance to take the course, he said.... LTC has online students from around the country, and this year for the first time, it also has a student from outside the United States—a person studying radio chemistry from England.
