MIT Looks to Stimulate Innovation with the Official Launch of Its OpenCourseWare Initiative - Peter J. Stokes, Eduventures

Reaction was mixed when MIT first announced plans for its OpenCourseWare (OCW) initiative in April of 2001. For some, MIT's stated intention to publish virtually all of its courses online was considered a revolutionary act - one that tapped into the same burgeoning zeitgeist that had spawned the open-source software movement a few years earlier. As Linux was to proprietary operating systems, the reasoning went, so OCW would be to the commercialization of knowledge. Publishers and other content providers would be brought to their knees. "Information," they used to say, "wants to be free."
