Federal Agencies Learn to Check That Degrees Are From Accredited Colleges - Stephen Barr, Washington Post
The Office of Personnel Management is urging federal agencies to step up oversight of employee training and education programs to ensure that taxpayer dollars do not subsidize "diploma mills." "Our policy is quite clear," Kay Coles James, the OPM director, said in a memo to agency heads this week. "Where the federal government requires or funds an academic degree, directly or otherwise, that degree must be from an accredited college or university." The possibility that federal employees, and perhaps some political appointees, have used bogus degrees to get ahead in the government has prompted Sen. Susan M. Collins (R-Maine) and Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.) to ask for an investigation by the General Accounting Office.
