Commission wants to close loophole governing Internet college - ALLISON BARKER, Associated Press

....The American Public University System moved its headquarters to Charles Town from Manassas, Va., last year after failing to gain regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In West Virginia, colleges and universities are accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.... Under the state's rules, which amount to little more than registration, American Public can operate as a degree granting institution with virtually no oversight by the Higher Education Policy Commission, Chancellor J. Michael Mullen told commission members Friday. "I think we have some problems in both code and in our procedures where it pertains to institutions that may be identified as proprietary or correspondent," Mullen said. "They're not only conferring certificates. They are going much beyond the correspondent school where you get your truck drivers license. They confer associate degrees. They confer baccalaureate degrees and they now confer master's degrees and they have never been before this body."
