Tidewater CC Distance learning gaining popularity - KRISTEN KING, The Virginian-Pilot
In fall 2000, Erin Maple had two children, a full-time job as a receptionist and a nagging desire to turn her fascination with biology into a career. Good thing she also had a computer. This summer, Maple will complete an associate's degree in science at Tidewater Community College -- her first step toward a doctorate in biology. Forty percent of her classes were conducted online, allowing her to finish a year earlier than if if she'd had to fit all that fixed class time into her already stretched schedule.... Maple isn't the only student capitalizing on the convenience of cyberspace. Preliminary numbers show enrollment is up 58 percent this summer over last summer in what TCC calls its distributed education courses, and enrollment during the 2002-03 school year is three times what it was two years earlier.
