Lona Downing's long wait is finally over. For more than 65 years, the 84-year-old has wanted to wear a mortarboard and gown and accept a college degree from a professor. On Saturday, she will do just that at Eastern Oregon University's graduation ceremony... When she learned about Southwestern's University Center and distance education degree programs, Lona decided it was fate. Once she learned about each college's online programs, Eastern became her college of choice.... The distance education program was tailor-made for Downing, said Ellen Riley, EOU's advisor and director of the Southwestern Oregon Division of distance education. The program allowed her to work at her own pace, she added.
