Illinois students rush to Laptop U. - DAVE NEWBART, Chicago Sun-Times
...It's a college campus that exists only in cyberspace, and it's growing fast. About 40,000 students at Illinois public universities now take classes online, a 600 percent increase from just a few years ago, and that number could double or triple in the next decade or so. Expecting an enrollment boost of as many as 115,000 students by 2020--there are about 195,000 today--state universities plan to teach many more courses online, in keeping with a nationwide trend that could reshape the nature of higher education. In Illinois, some administrators say, the explosive growth of online instruction could lead eventually to the offering of a "State of Illinois" degree--as opposed to, say, a U. of I. degree--for which students would take a mix of courses at any and all state universities."It's the next frontier in accessibility," said University of Illinois at Chicago Chancellor Sylvia Manning.
