Online learning set to become much smarter

Imagine a learning environment where the course prerequisites actually fast-track people into their studies, not being contrived to keep students out for lack of resources. And let's say this large-scale education system also offered individually tailored courses for every student, each working at their own pace, anywhere in the country. Could this educational utopia materialise? A group of five Australian universities (Macquarie, Newcastle, New England, Southern Queensland and Tasmania) and a number of private companies (WebMCQ, IPR Systems, Computer Associates, Fretwell Downing, WebCT), two of them multinationals, are about to find out. They are working on a federally funded pilot project, due for completion next month for a world debut in September, called the Collaborative Online Learning and Information System (COLIS). Their system dynamically creates courses individually tailored for each student, built on-the-fly out of modular learning objects, as determined by a person's online test results....
