Heeger began mapping out plans for an idea he helped launch at New York University: a for-profit, online subsidiary. Heeger rounded up $20 million in private sector commitments for UMUC Online, which was designed to leverage the college's expertise in distance learning to sell marketing, distribution and tech support to less-experienced universities looking to attract online students and administer courses over the Web. But last fall, UMUC Online was quietly folded back into the university, a financial failure....
