The Role of the Instructor in Web-Based Instruction: Are We Practicing What We Preach?

Introduction: While theories abound regarding how the field of education and training will grow and develop during the twenty-first century, there is a general consensus that Web-based instruction will play a prominent role. “The widespread availability and access to the Internet, a student population that is increasingly non-traditional, and occupational forces that require worker re-education, have fueled the avalanche of Web-based courses in higher education” (Miller and Miller 1999). Since it is apparent that the growth of Web-based instruction will continue, educators have a responsibility to address their role in this trend and wield its power wisely.
