http://www.charlestonco.com/features.cfm?id=95&type=np Visualizing the Digital Commons Donald Beagle Gene Levy, Provost at Rice University, recently made a comment that deserves careful and critical attention in the library community. As reported in Judy Luther's interesting account of the ARL/OCLC Strategic Issues Forum on Future Library Architecture (Charleston Advisor April 2002), Levy claimed that the concept of a “browseable stack” as the essence of a library, still defended by many faculty, is an intellectual fallacy as the online environment provides better discovery tools and is more effective than serendipity in the stacks. Levy's generalization calls for reflection and scrutiny on a number of levels....
