The process -- used in cross-marketing studies and credit-card checks, for instance -- is a common one, but the way it works remains opaque even to many of those who use it, according to Daniel Larose, an associate professor of mathematical sciences at Central Connecticut State University. Mr. Larose directs a new online degree program at the university that trains professionals in the marketing, computer-science, finance, and biopharmaceutical industries in the theory and practice of data mining....
